Ants
Ants are one of the most common pests in and around buildings. They may build nests in the soil, in the walls of a structure, or in decaying wood. Even though ants have huge colonies, they are more annoying than harmful. They mainly enter a building when searching for food but normally aren’t considered a public health pest.
Spiders
Spiders are not insects but are arthropods in the class Arachnida and are one of the most common arthropods seen by homeowners. They are considered beneficial because they eat many insects, however, two species in Utah are medically concerning because of their toxic bite. These are known as the Western Black Widow Spider and the Desert Recluse Spider.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are one of the most common insect pests found in buildings and homes. They are very bothersome around kitchen areas and other areas where food may be prepared. They may contaminate food and leave an unpleasant odor, so keeping these areas sanitary is the first step in preventing these insects.
Scorpions
There are 4 different types of scorpions that are commonly found in the St. George area. They are the Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion, the Arizona Bark Scorpion, the Black Hairy Scorpion, and the Northern Scorpion. Scorpions love dark and moist hiding spots and are great hiders, so even if you might not see them very often, it’s always good to take preventive measures.
Rats/Mice
Rats and mice eat almost every food that humans, pets, and livestock eat. One of the biggest concerns with mice and rats is transmitting diseases when infected feces and urine contaminate food. If food is contaminated, it is imperative to throw the food out and take action to remove the rodents.
Wasps
Wasps are considered beneficial insects because they don’t just pollinate flowers but they are also predators of many different insects and spiders. Even though they are beneficial, wasp venoms can be deadly due to allergic reactions.
Earwigs
Earwigs got their name from the old European myth that they crawl into people’s ears and tunnel into their brains while they are sleeping. Even though this hasn’t been scientifically proven, they are still creepy crawlers and the pinchers on the back of the abdomen are quite frightening. Earwigs aren’t necessarily a pest that is a threat to humans, but are more of just a nuisance to people by their presence.
Silverfish
Silverfish aren’t a type of fish, but are rather a small silver insect that has three long, tail-like appendages on the rear end of their body. They are normally found in moist places and feed mainly on paper, glue, and clothes. Silverfish aren’t necessarily harmful to humans, but can cause damage to household items made of paper.
Ticks
Ticks are small arthropods that are more closely related to spiders and mites than to insects. Ticks find a host by climbing plants and jumping out to grab onto a passing host. They can sense a host by the carbon dioxide, host odors, or heat coming from the host. After feeding off of their host, ticks drop to the ground to then lay eggs.
Fleas
The Cat Flea is the most common flea found around structures. Fleas feed by biting and sucking blood. They inject saliva that results in irritation and subsequent scratching, and will bite adult humans on their ankles and children as they crawl on the floor.
